West African Drums

Drums are everywhere in Africa.  Want to learn?

  1. Watch this video of a 4-year-old drummer in Mali and be inspired!  (You don't have to watch the whole thing, but make sure you see him whoop and holler at about 1:04 :)
  2. Now play on your drum!  Just experiment with different sounds and see what you can do.
  3. Then watch this video to learn six basic drumming sounds.
  4. Now practice!

Contrasts: Past and Future, Developed and Developing

One of the most striking things about Senegal (and probably many developing countries, both in Africa and beyond) is the juxtaposition between traditional and modern cultures.  Watch these resources to explore these contrasts.

West African Music

Music in Senegal is all about the beat, and whether it's traditional or contemporary, you'll always feel the beat.

  1. Listen to this traditional "sabar" dance music.  And watch the dancing!
  2. Ecoutez cette chanson.  C'est Youssou N'Dour qui la chante.  Ecoutez et discoutez les elements de la tradition et la modernite.
  3. Browse these songs--you can listen to a snippet of each!
